Your teeth play a vital role in the health and structure of your jaw. When a tooth is removed due to various reasons, the jawbone is affected since that tooth’s roots are no longer there to stimulate the bone. This can lead to various issues including deterioration of the jawbone. The solution is a bone graft.
Using bone from a bone bank, we are able to improve the strength of your jaw by placing a bone graft in the empty tooth socket. Over time, the graft stimulates your body to regenerate bone at the site of the tooth extraction, improving the stability of your jaw.
The dentists at Midlothian Dental Arts will work with you to determine the best treatment for your individual case, as there are a few different bone grafting procedures that can be performed.
In some cases, a procedure known as ridge augmentation may be needed. This essentially mimics the treatment of a bone graft but over a larger area of the jaw, especially if there’s more than one tooth missing or the teeth have been missing for a longer period of time.
We also offer a procedure known as a sinus lift in the case of a missing back upper tooth. Because this area is directly below the sinus cavity, there are instances where the sinus floor will drop down into the space created from the missing tooth. A sinus lift pushes the sinus cavity back into place and fills the area with bone to stabilize it.
In every case, bone grafting helps to prepare the area for dental implants to replace the gap in your smile. While this is great for aesthetic reasons, it also plays a huge role in chewing functionality and jaw health. If you have questions about bone grafting and whether it is an option for you, please don’t hesitate to call our office. We are happy to set up a consultation with you to discuss your needs.
